  • Essen - the heart of the ruhr area!

I lived here for 8 years of my life and must say: totally underestimated city. I loved every single day of it. And these are my favorite spots. Have fun!

    1

    Restaurant

Right in the boring city center. You can have a look at the artists studios, use the coworking space and drink and eat there all day. Something different!

  • Zeche Zollverein

    2

    History Museum

A lot to explore here. Not only the old buidlings, but also the Sanaa Building is very interesting. Don't miss the Kokerei: swim in summer, ice skate in winter.

  • Stadtgarten

    3

    Park

Right behind the main train station. Nice little park, where people go after work to hang out. Really cool during park sound days.

  • Haumannplatz

    4

    Park

Nearby the Gruga Park (entrance fee! ) this is your alternative, free of charge, since it's a public place. Bring your frisbee and barbecue gear and relax.

  • Le Chat Noir

    5

    Wine Bar

Hidden treasure! Great wine bar and excellent food. I could have the warm raddiccio salad every day.

  • Tatort Essen

    6

    French

Really awesome french restaurant with an always changing and really interesting menu. Not the cheapest though. Reserve a table!

  • Mörchens Eis

    7

    Ice Cream

Pretty far south but worth the stroll down the Rüttenscheider Street. Long lines on sunny summer days.

  • Baldeneysee Regattaturm

    8

    Scenic Lookout

This is where you spend a sunny day. Sitting in the sun, eating ice cream. Taking a walk along the river. Beautiful scenery there.

  • Museum Folkwang

    9

    Art Museum

My favorite place! Awesome museum with an excellent photographic collection. And do not miss to visit the Walther König Bookstore inside!

  • Gold Bar

    10

    Café

Also located in Essen Süd at the Isenbergplatz, next to de prins. They have wood fire in the winter time, you can sit outside in summer. Perfect for sundays.

  • Projekt Zweibar

    11

Nice place for breakfast when you're hungover. Eat the Katerfrühstück then. Good coffee. They also have seating in the small backyard. Always lovely there.

  • Lichtburg

    12

This is the biggest movie theatre in germany, so a must see. Also on thursdays they have a free Jazz session at the Blue Salon: small place, good music.

  • Madame Chocolat

    13

    Bar

This is the place to go to when everything is closed and earlier. Cozy place, interesting people and tasty beer.

  • Tofino

    14

    Burgers

They make nice burgers. Also have an vegetarian option.

  • de Prins

    15

    Pub

Dutch bar with dutch food and dutch beer. have the classic pommel special with the monthly mayonnaise. Really crowded during soccer matches, so be early!
