it is both the norwegian riviera and the norwegian bible-belt: summerhouse communities side by side with holy rollers in their campers. a limited list of faves.
Theater
the building might be more impressive than what it actually contains. how norwegian! however, a café with a lovely view is nothing to complain about.
Vegetarian / Vegan
vegetarian restaurant and organic grocery. the menu looks promising, offering a nice change of routine from the usually drab sørlandet restaurant scene.
Art Museum
a relatively new foundation that supports regional artists. i don't know about its quality, but the south needs more art. also nearby is kristiansand kunsthall.
Coffee Shop
people scream about the fact that they get their beans from tim wendelboe. i'm just grateful there's decent coffee to be had outside of oslo. cuba life = planB.
Soccer
START is not much of a team, though they helped developed costa rican christian bolaños into a star (he left them for fc copenhagen). that said, when in rome...
Beach
brekkestø is one of my favorite tiny seaside villages. we have our summerhouse here (about two miles out in the archipelago). grab an ice cream by the harbor.
Trail
this is more a stand-in for the hundreds and hundreds of lovely places where one can explore sørlandet by foot. so many wonderful views, so many fine hikes.
Harbor / Marina
the best fish cakes in all of sørlandet can be found at the market on the pier. they're often sent by overnight shipping to various places around the world.
Café
if one maintains modest expectations, than one won't be disappointed. a fine place for a beer, but don't hold out for a grand dining experience.
Scenic Lookout
Easy hike to a lovely look-out over the harbor and city heights. Continue to the northeast down to the point towards Biodden, winding roads, clusters of homes.
Garden
A great place for an evening jog or, during winter hours, for cross-country skiing. Miles and miles of trails over hills and forests and along a sprawling lake.
Café
a quaint alternative to apotekergården. again, modest expectations. limited hours. limited menu. sit upstairs.
Farm
A working farm with a café and bakery that offers farm to table fare in the truest sense of the word.
Concert Hall
an impressive outdoor theater that's been cut of a rock quarry. they often put on ibsen productions, of varying quality. that said, it's a treat during summer.
Restaurant
Here too a working farm very close to the sea. Very impressive winterized greenhouse productions on site, with a lovely café on the premises. a fine outing.
Hotel
once an opulent summer resort in fevik that for decades has been struggling to regain its footing. the sandy beach is a wonderful bathing spot. lovely views.
